H2K nominee Tyler Franks

On May 4th, 2021, Prairie Grove police officer Tyler Franks faced a night that would change his life forever. Responding to a domestic disturbance call, Franks and fellow officer Andrew Gibson rushed to a residence on West Thurman Street, unaware that the situation would escalate into a life-threatening confrontation.

As Franks attempted to enter a bedroom, the suspect opened fire, discharging multiple rounds from both a shotgun and a handgun. Franks was struck in both legs. Acting swiftly, Gibson returned fire, neutralizing the threat, and immediately sprang into action to save his partner. Dragging Franks to safety, Gibson applied two tourniquets on the wounded officer—an action that undoubtedly saved his life.

Franks was rushed to Washington Regional Medical Center, where doctors made the difficult decision to amputate part of his left leg above the knee due to severe vascular damage. After spending eight days in the intensive care unit, he was transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Fayetteville to begin his recovery.

On June 2, Franks made his triumphant return home, greeted by an outpouring of support from the community. Law enforcement agencies from across Northwest Arkansas escorted him, and the town honored him with a heartfelt parade, a testament to the gratitude and admiration he has inspired.

Despite the hardships he endured, Franks remains unwavering in his commitment to serving his community. Though he has decided to step away from policing, he continues to make a difference. Alongside his wife, he now volunteers as a firefighter, proving that his dedication to protecting others remains steadfast.

Tyler Franks' bravery and resilience serve as an inspiration to many. His courage in the face of adversity and his unwavering commitment to service embody the very best of public service. We extend our deepest gratitude to him—not only for his sacrifice but for his continued efforts to support and protect his community.
