While working an off-duty assignment, Jared Reston responded to a report of two shoplifters. One of the suspects physically fought with loss prevention and another ran. After a foot pursuit, Reston was able put his hands on the suspect. A fight ensued and the suspect produced a .45 caliber handgun and began shooting Reston. After being shot, Reston was able to return fire and killed the suspect. When it was all over, Reston took a total of seven rounds: one through the jaw, three to his body armor, one through his left thigh, one in his right buttock, and a graze of his right elbow.
